Things To Do In Kraków In December

Kraków, the most frequently visited city in Poland, is always charming and beautiful. But in winter it changes, into a fairy tale. The medieval castle and Old Town market turn into a magical place, and with a bit of luck, the whole scenery is calmly covered with a white blanket of snow. It is beautiful, but is there something to do there this time of the year? Of course! Let’s take a look at all the things you can do while visiting Kraków in December.

A Festive Feast At The Christmas Market

As it gets cold and the scent of cinnamon and mulled wine fills the air, Kraków’s Main Market Square comes alive with the amazing Christmas market.

You can wander through rows of wooden stalls decorated with handcrafted souvenirs, and hand-painted ceramics.

Giving in to sipping on mulled wine or traditional honey, indulge in delicious treats like pierogi, kielbasa, or bigos. Music and festive performances add to the atmosphere and create the perfect setting for exploring the street of Kraków in December.

Here’s a video I made of the Christmas market in Kraków in 2022.

Wawel Castle, Where History Comes To Life

Built upon a hill overlooking the Vistula River, Wawel Castle stands as a testament to Poland’s history. It is one of the few medieval castles preserved so well.

The castle makes a perfect place to hide from the cold air outside. Royal chambers, artifacts that belonged to the kings, treasures, regalia, and armory, will keep you captivated for long hours.

The Cathedral at Wawel is also worth visiting and climbing up the tower to enjoy the panoramic view of Kraków in winter. At the Cathedral, you will also have the opportunity to visit the tomb of Polish kings, that ruled the country and were among the greatest kings in Europe.

Sukiennice – Cloth Hall

Kraków’s most iconic place is definitely the array of Sukiennice, a historic Cloth Hall at the heart of the city. This was for centuries a trade place of unique goods, and it still is. In December, it is decorated with Christmas ornaments and becomes an extension of the Christmas market.

Beautiful stalls showcase the finest of Polish craftsmanship. From amber jewelry to traditional crafts, the Sukiennice gives you a deep insight into the Kraków heritage.

Krakow’s Underground Museum

There is a museum literally under the Kraków Old Town Market. And the name of it is, of course, the Underground Museum. What is inside, this museum? Here, Kraków uncovers its medieval roots with interactive exhibitions and recreated merchant’s chambers.

The underground passageways that were once merchants’ and traders’ streets, are here for you to explore and to really travel in time. The entrance to the museum is right by the Sukienice at the Old Town Square. This could be a perfect place to escape from the cold streets, yet remain within the streets.

Ice Skating In Krakow

If you are an enthusiast of winter activities, Ice Rink will be a perfect place for you. A good ice rink is set at the Jordan’s Park. The place is off the main tourist routes, so it might be a bit quieter, however, it is well-known among the locals. Opt rather for morning hours.

There are more Ice rinks in Kraków, you can find them in my other article about Kraków in winter. Ice rinks are usually available to the public at the beginning of December. Whether you’re a seasoned skater or a first-timer, the joy of ice skating in Kraków is an experience to remember.

Warm yourself Up In Thermal Baths

Once you visited all the must-see places and walked up and down the streets of Kraków, it is time to warm up a little. And yes, mulled wine is a way to keep warm, but how about a visit to the thermal baths? Whether you choose to unwind at the luxurious Szczawnica or opt for the modern Aqua Park, the healing mineral-rich waters bring relaxation like no other. December is always a special time, as many Christmas offers are on, it is good to look out for them.

Immersing in indoor and outdoor pools, saunas, and steam rooms, allowing the soothing waters to ease your muscles and rejuvenate your senses while the snow falls outside. Read more about your options for thermal baths in the following articles:

Wieliczka or Bochnia Salt Mine

Salt Mine – Wieliczka is located just outside of Kraków, and it is a must-visited place. Listed as the UNESCO heritage, excavated and produced salt for over 800 hundred years.

You can explore the labyrinth of tunnels and chambers, revealing awe-inspiring salt-carved sculptures and chapels decorated with salt crystals. You can also learn about the history of salt mining.

There is a frequent bus connection from Kraków to Wieliczka, providing easy access to the site also during winter.

Alternatively, you may visit another salt mine that’s a bit further, about 1-hour drive from Kraków. It’s called Bochnia Salt Mine and it’s the oldest salt mine in Poland.

Visit to Auschwitz Concentration Camp

There is one very prosaic reason to visit this place in winter. There are simply fewer people visiting it this time. Peace and space are what are needed in order to deeply understand this place and give respect to those who lost their lives there.

While a visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau may be emotionally challenging, it is important to acknowledge all that happens there and have awareness, that it should not happen again. A visit to Auschwitz might take up a whole day, therefore plan it for the morning hours, as it gets dark just after 3 pm in December.

A Day Trip To Zakopane

Zakopane is just 2 hours drive from Kraków. December is actually a very good month for a winter visit, as it gets very crowded after Christmas when school breaks start. Whether you have a car, or you move around by public transport, you will find this town very accessible.

Tatra Mountains and the town of Zakopane nestled right at their feet. In Zakopane explore Krupówki Street, where you can find traditional highland crafts and local food. Enjoy the breathtaking view from Gubałówka Hill, and if you’re feeling adventurous, take a trek into the snow-covered landscapes in one of the valleys surrounding Zakopane.

Unforgettable Kraków In December

Kraków in December turns into a fairy tale wonderland, with decorative ornaments and festive atmospheres.

The smell of delicious food, tapestries, and woven clothing, gives it a cozy feeling. And on the other hand, the Renaissance architecture adds a layer of splendor to the city’s vibrant character.

Kraków in December is truly unforgettable, and regardless of the weather, there is always something interesting to do.
